FAKE ORGANIC PRODUCTS FOUND IN ITALY
The Italian police have dismantled a gang of alleged counterfeiters of organic food. In addition, 2,500 tons of fake products were seized. The criminal group is said to have sold more than 700,000 tons of fake organic products - broad beans, field beans, soy beans, corn for animal feed and lower amounts of wheat - for years, worth a total of around 220 million euros, in several European countries.

TRACEABILITY AND AUTHENTICITY OF FEED MATERIALS
At present the complexity of food and feed production systems is steadily increasing and particularly feed trade is subjected to globalisation. In addition, feed materials are obtained from new sources or are produced by new technologies. These facts may contribute to new and unforeseen risks for animal and human health. In a crisis situation due to contamination or adulteration of feed materials, theid entification of origin can be essential in regard to feed safety as well as food safety.
Work Package 2 of the EU research project QSAFFE (Quality and Safety of Feeds and Food in Europe) will develop and improve systems of traceability and authenticity of feed materials. This will be achieved by application of different analytical techniques in order to identify useful tools in tracing origin and composition of feed materials.

DETERMINATION OF GEOGRAPHICAL ORIGIN OF SHEA TREE AND PHYSALIS FRUITS BY GENETIC FINGERPRINTS
Trade intensified and spread to the entire planet. The consumer is demanding and sensitive to the quality and origin of food products they buy. Given the difficulty of setting up documentation systems in countries in sub-Saharan Africa, new strategies are emerging traceability. Among the new means of tracing products of plant origin, the idea of creating a "biological bar code" based on the analysis of DNA of microorganisms on fruit is an interesting idea. This is the subject of the book written by A.F. El Sheikha (CIRAD, UMR Qualisud)and published in French

USE OF GEOCHEMICAL MARKERS FOR THE AUTHENTICATION OF THE GEOGRAPHICAL ORIGIN OF CEREAL IN EUROPE
The publication (from the FP6 project TRACE) entitled "Combining isotopic signatures of n(87Sr)/n(86Sr) and light stable elements (C, N, O, S) with multi-elemental profiling for the authentication of provenance of European cereal samples" was to develop methods based on the use of geochemical markers for the authentication of the geographical origin of cereal samples in Europe. For the first time, the potential usefulness of combining n(87Sr)/n(86Sr) and 13C, 15N, 18O and 34S isotopic signatures, alone or with key element concentrations ([Na], [K], [Ca], [Cu] and [Rb], progressively identified out of 31 sets of results), was investigated through multiple step multivariate statistics for more than 500 cereal samples collected over 2 years from 17 sampling sites across Europe representing an extensive range of geographical and environmental characteristics.

DISCRIMINATION OF CORSICAN HONEY BY FT-RAMAN SPECTROSCOPY AND CHEMOMETRICS
Honey is a complex and challenging product to analyze due mainly to its composition consisting on various botanical sources. The discrimination of the origin of honey is of prime importance in order to reinforce the consumer trust in this typical food product. But this is not an easy task as usually no single chemical or physical parameter is sufficient. The aim of the paper (from the FP6 TRACE project) entitled "Discrimination of Corsican honey by FT-Raman spectroscopy and chemometrics" is to investigate whether FT-Raman spectroscopy as spectroscopic fingerprint technique combined with some chemometric tools can be used as a rapid and reliable method for the discrimination of honey according to their source.

FINGERPRINTING METHODS TO AUTHENTICATE BEER
Beer is an example of a processed cereal product that is consumed widely across the EU and the wider world. Brand identity is a key attribute of beers and often arises from longstanding brewing practices associated with a region, town or even religious order. One such example of the latter is the Trappist beer produced in Belgium and The Netherlands. Trappist and non-Trappist beers have been used by the TRACE project to develop original models enabling one to distinguish the origin of beer products, Rochefort.
The video here below gives an overview of the process of the beer production chain and illustrates outcomes of the beer study

TRACETRACKER ANNOUNCES SOLUTION TO STREAMLINE EU-REGULATION COMPLIANCE FOR SEAFOOD INDUSTRY
TraceTracker, a leader in product traceability, announced a new solution this week that aims to relieve the seafood industry from a "tsunami" of paperwork related to a new EU-regulation. An EU law (1005/2008) which came in force on January 1, 2010 combats illegal, unregulated and undocumented (IUU) fishing with a series of new requirements. However, it creates a mountain of paperwork for seafood importers and exporters who must document the source and history of wild-caught seafood products entering the EU.
TraceTracker’s solution, Fish Pass, relieves the burden of compliance by streamlining documentation management. It enables supply chain partners to exchange, evaluate, approve and archive required documentation and records through a shared, online portal. It can be implemented between single company and its immediate suppliers or along entire supply chains. In addition, authorities on both sides of the EU border can make use of the Fish Pass to increase their effectiveness. The solution is based on electronic product traceability principles and meets all relevant industry standards such as GS1, EPCIS and others. It integrates with IT systems within individual companies and catch certificate databases in flag state countries, linking catch information from every step in the supply chain.

THE FIRST GOTRACE SYMPOSIUM
The first GoTrace Symposium, an Australian and New Zealand Symposium dedicated to issues of global traceability and verification of origin, was held in Wellington, New Zealand on 2 July 2009. The Symposium was attended by over 100 delegates from Australia, New Zealand, and the EU who enjoyed a full day of presentations from speakers from Australia, UK, and New Zealand. Topics covered ranged from quantum dots and nano particles to the application of verification and traceability systems. There was considerable interest in work from the EU in terms of development of technologies and in emerging regulatory requirements within the EU; primarily, as EU countries are major export markets for Australian and New Zealand produce. The symposium was organised in response to the general lack of participation by Australian or NZ delegates in Northern Hemisphere conferences on origin and traceability coupled with the obvious need for producers within both countries to be aware of, and participating in, the development of food supply chain systems. The Symposium was sponsored by Oritain Global Limited, The University of Otago, GNS Science, GS1, The AgriBusiness Group and held in conjunction with TRACE-EU and New Zealand Trade and Enterprise.

GLOBALISATION OF THE FOOD CHAIN
The globalisation of the food chain, which has seen more and more food that is grown in one part of the world but processed and consumed in others, means that a disease outbreak or food scare in one country can quickly be felt elsewhere. The chief supply officer at one multinational food company says that three to five years ago, a food scare in the US was likely to be confined to that country, because the ingredients for its products were sourced and manufactured there. But now, some 60 per cent of ingredients are sourced and used globally.

A LABEL AGAINST THE FRAUDS ON THE WINE
It is estimated that 30% of the wine bottles sold in Europe are falsified. Some countries as China even recognize that 70% of the imported wines are falsified. In this context, the operational technical centre of wine (CTOV), in Spain, announced the development of a label including a security system very similar to the one used on banknotes and some identity documents. This adhesive label, we can easily apply between the neck and the stopper of the bottles, includes an invisible code and an encrypted system storing informations on each wine, cellar, vineyard... Each wine producer would be in charge to activate itself its own labels via a CTOV patented technology. This system would cost only 3 centimes Euro by bottle.

TRACEABILITY IN THE FOOD SUPPLY CHAIN IN US
A recent work carried out by the Office of Inspector General (OIG) showed that that only 5 of the 40 purchased products could be traced through each stage of the food supply chain back to the farm or border. The ability to trace the remaining food products through each stage of the food supply chain was limited because: (1) food facilities often did not maintain lot-specific information, (2) some products were not labeled with lot-specific information, and (3) a number of food facilities mixed raw food products from a large number of farms.

ANIMAL IDENTIFICATION AND TRACEABILITY UPDATE AT O.I.E.
Discrepancies between national identification of live animals and traceability systems of animal products make it difficult to trace products of animal origin throughout the food chain at the world level; developing countries risk losing out on market access because of trade barriers that sometimes are put in place as a result of these discrepancies. The best way to prevent this is for all countries to progressively implement international standards, such as those of the O.I.E. and Codex

TRACEABILITY OF HONEY ORIGIN BASED ON VOLATILES PATTERN PROCESSING BY ARTIFICIAL NEURAL NETWORKS
Head-space solid-phase microextraction (HS-SPME)-based procedure, coupled to comprehensive twodimensional gas chromatography–time-of-flight mass spectrometry (GC×GC–TOF MS), was employed for fast characterisation of honey volatiles. In total, 374 samples were collected over two production seasons in Corsica (n = 219) and other European countries (n = 155) with the emphasis to confirm the authenticity of the honeys labelled as “Corsica” (protected denomination of origin region). For the chemometric analysis, artificial neural networks with multilayer perceptrons (ANN-MLP) were tested. The best prediction (94.5%) and classification (96.5%) abilities of the ANN-MLP model were obtained when the data from two honey harvests were aggregated in order to improve the model performance compared to separate year harvests.

WHAT ABOUT TRACEABILITY IN THE IRISH PORK FACTORIES?
All food and animal feed businesses are required to establish and implement food traceability systems which are compliant with current legislation. It is a legal requirement to have a system or set of procedures that allows food businesses to trace one step forward and one step back. This means that food businesses know who supplied them and where their product has gone. However, there is no legal requirement for food businesses to have traceability systems which can trace raw materials through the factory and into finished product (i.e. Process Traceability). So it is not a legal requirement for pork factories to be able to identify exactly which pork carcass from a particular farm went into each batch of finished pork product.

LOST WITHOUT TRACE: NEW APPROACHES FOR TRACING THE ORIGIN OF FOOD
The 4th annual conference of the TRACE project will take place in Torremolinos, Spain on the 23-25 April 2008.
Traceability is essential to ensure that all food products are documented at every step of food production and distribution. The TRACE project aims to provide systems that can not only trace food, but are also capable of confirming its origin. A key issue is electronic exchange of information between the links in the supply chain and verification of this information.
The Trace conference will include the workshop, “TraceFood Framework and TraceCore XML –International standard for electronic exchange of product information in the food supply chain”.
The workshop will take place on the 23rd of April
In addition there will be sessions regarding stakeholder views towards traceability and sessions on analytical methods for authenticating food.

TRACEABILITY PROGRAMS
Traceability programs may mean advantages for meat companies beyond disease monitoring" from Dr. Dom Castaldo. Almost every week, a release comes across my desk touting the advantages of a new traceability system. Each one features a new bell or a different whistle that enables manufacturers to trace a product faster or more precisely. At the same time, the U.S. government and some consumer groups are pushing for a mandatory traceability system for all livestock and meat. The concept of traceability in the livestock-raising and meat-processing industries makes sense from a food safety perspective. If there were a disease outbreak – foot and month, for instance – we – consumers and meat companies – would want some system in place to immediately locate every animal that was in contact with the infected animals.
